人們在不同意義上使用“大學”的概念大學。其一，從學校制度而言，“大學”指由國家設立的最高等級的學校，即“太學”，有別於地方設立的“塾”“庠”“序”等。其二，從教學內容而言，“大學”即所謂成人之學，主要講授為人處世、治國理政的道理與原則，有別於學習文字或具體禮儀、技藝的“小學”。其三，從教學目標而言，“大學”旨在幫助學生確立健全的人格與德性，培養治國理政的人才。
Daxue (Great Learning)
The concept means different things in different contexts. In terms of institutions of learning, it refers to the institution of highest learning, the imperial academy, established by the state, which is different from local schools. When it comes to content of learning, it refers to what a complete man should learn, namely, general rules and principles on governance and human relationship, which are different from that of xiaoxue, namely, learning of words and specific rites or skills. In terms of objective, great learning aims to help students develop sound personality and moral integrity and thus make them qualified for exercising governance.
